Virtual Darning Workshop Sat 25th Jan 2025 4PM - 7PM UK Time GMT
Do you have clothes that you’d love to wear again, but they’re stuck in the wardrobe because they need repairs?
This fabulous 3 hour workshop is all about visible mending - and is suitable for all levels, even total beginners!
During this online class you will learn a variety of woven darning techniques, including the classic ‘plain weave’, as well as twill, plaids, hopsack, herringbone and even dogtooth!
Visible mending is great for repairing holes but can also be used to cover stains, and even just to jazz up and customise your clothes! There doesn’t have to be a hole, and believe me once you’ve nailed the technique it can become quite addictive!
You will need:
yarns of your choice
an embroidery hoop
swatches of fabric to practice on, or any garments you’d like to repair
needle
scissors
If you would like to buy a kit, please click here.
Upon booking this workshop, you will receive an email containing a Zoom link, plus a PDF of simple simulations to print out. We will use these as a guide during the class.
Please do not panic if the email does not arrive immediately, I respond individually to each booking, usually within 24 hours.
A video recording of the workshop will be sent out afterwards, for you to look back on at your own pace, re-winding, pausing and fast-forwarding as many times as you like.
We are much less likely to throw our clothes away if we have mended them even just once. Our garment becomes more precious. Once we have invested time into repairing our clothes, and we can see and admire our own hand work, we feel more attached, and proud! It is a GOOD feeling.
And as repairs build up over time, the garment starts to tell its own story, starts to hold memories.
We all know that we cannot go on investing in fast fashion, engaging in this ‘buy-discard-buy-discard’ cycle, compromising on both quality and ethics. It isn’t cheaper if you need to replace clothing often.
Buying better quality (including second hand), and learning how to repair your clothing long term is a much more environmentally friendly and economic choice, plus, mending is a useful (once upon a time, essential) skill that we can pass on to the next generation. And its FUN!
Many people find craft to be therapeutic. Even 5 minutes of stitching a day be beneficial to our wellbeing. This is a craft that teaches us to slow down, and in our digital age, it feels nice to be making something with our hands.
So join me for a fun and colourful three hours of learning, sharing and making, and give your clothes a few extra years of wear!
